Register for the October Water Webinar on Five Decades of Water Restoration Research

Join us for the next Arkansas Water Webinar on Thursday, October 16, from noon to 1 p.m. The webinar will explore five decades of water restoration research and how combining historical methods with new multi-faceted approaches and emerging technologies can significantly improve aquatic ecosystem restoration outcomes.

Byron A. Winston, Senior Environmental Scientist at AECOM and a University of Arkansas alumnus, and Matt Julius, a Professor at St. Cloud State University, will present on how water restoration best practices have evolved since the late 1960s and what needs to change moving forward.

The presentation will examine nutrient management strategies that have remained largely static for half a century, while anthropogenic eutrophication has continued to expand with urbanization. Winston and Julius will discuss how theoretical debates over bottom-up and top-down restoration approaches are being resolved with data, pointing toward multi-faceted restoration strategies.

The speakers will review historical management efforts and theory development, identify limitations of traditional approaches, and present current research addressing these challenges. The webinar will also cover emerging technologies that address specific issues, such as internal loading, which can slow the recovery of target aquatic systems.

Register for the October water webinar to learn how blending historical mitigation recommendations with whole ecosystem efforts can maximize restoration efficacy.
