Timely Topics to be Covered at AWRC Annual Conference

The Arkansas Water Resources Center is holding its annual water conference on July 30 and 31 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This year’s theme is “Water Management and Nutrient Recovery”.

For this year’s conference, we are teaming up with various partners to develop an agenda that addresses current water challenges for the State and region.

We are working with Dr. Lauren Greenlee, assistant professor of chemical engineering at the University of Arkansas to share information about the needs and opportunities for water and nutrient recycling from agricultural and municipal sectors. The goal is to come up with solutions to reclaim nutrients from wastewater and increase water availability. This could benefit regions where water is limited, for example in the Delta where groundwater levels are declining.

Groundwater availability for agricultural production is an extremely important topic for the people and the economy of Arkansas. We are partnering with the U.S. Geological Survey to answer questions about water availability in one of the most important agricultural regions in the United States – the Mississippi Alluvial Plain.

Finally, we are teaming up again with the Arkansas Chapter of the American Water Resources Association for their annual symposium. That group will focus on an agenda that covers “Collaborations in Water Quality” with agriculture, as well as the draft regulation on nutrient trading in Arkansas.

Due to our focused topics at this year’s conference, there will not be a call for oral presentations; however, we will put out a call for student poster presentations soon.
